The Revenant Trailer: Or (why Chivo is going to win his third Oscar (back to back to back) this year)

Have you watched this yet?  Of course you have.  Everyone has.  I'm the last person to watch this, I know.  Listen, I don't know if anyone has ever (in any category) won three Oscars back to back to back (speak now Josh), and I know that everyone is groaning for Deakins to finally win (which isn't going to happen for Sicario), but I don't think that anyone could deny that Emmanuel Lubezki, while always a brilliant cinematographer, has been on the grandest of hot streaks this decade.  I've spoken my piece about my feelings on his Oscar win for Gravity, but even disregarding that film we're still left with The Tree of Life, To the Wonder and Birdman; all stunning work.

And now we have The Revenant.

I'm not going to lie, this looks like his best work to date.  BY A LOT.  The use of light, NATURAL LIGHT, the framing, the breadth of landscape captured coupled with such grand, sweeping movement and energy.

EVERY
FRAME
IS
DELICIOUS!

And speaking of every frame; feast!

DROOLING, and those are just images I could find with a Google search.  I'm sure Sati has better images she's constructed on her desktop right now.

With the way the year is unfolding, and films that appeared to be targeting Oscar falling to the wayside as disappointments, could The Revenant be the one to beat?  DiCaprio's Oscar win is looking more and more likely, and with Inarritu's hotstreak firmly in place, this brutally beautiful end of year epic could wind up being a massive Oscar player.

I need this movie in my life!

  1. For me, much of the film looks like as if Terrence Malick did a remake of sorts of Valhalla Rising as if it's a version of The New World from Hell. I totally want to see this because of Chivo.

    1. Yeah, I'm hoping I get to see this one in the theater...but I fear that this move may prevent that!

    2. Thank you!

Are you gonna be doing new Oscar predictions soon? A lot has changed since you last posted it, it actually looks like Leo is a frontrunner now unless Academy does the boring move and gives it to Fassy

    3. Yeah, I have them worked up I just need to find the time to post them. I have three weeks before I have to be out of this house, so sometime within the next three weeks I'll have them posted :-)

    1. That bear scene looks INCREDIBLE!

I have a thing for bears, though...er...wrong kind.

  5. Deakins seems like a shoe in for an honorary oscar down the road. His photography is immaculate but some of his best work also ends up coming out when other people's best work comes out- 2007 with No Country & Robert Ford up against Elswit's work on There Will Be Blood and what looks to be in this case going up against Chivo's work on The Revenant.

The new trailer evokes such a sense of primal tribalism. Something I immediately respond to in movies. As much as comparisons can be drawn to The New World, it honestly looks like something Herzog would make. I can't think of a better Christmas present.

    1. Yeah, Deakins has produced some incredible work (and I personally think he should have won, in a walk, back in 2007), but he tends to have the misfortune of being up against either a masterwork OR a film with better Oscar reception.

And YES...this trailer made me think of your post on films set in jungles. It feels very Herzog...but with an energy unheard of. It's ferocious.

  6. This latest trailer is like heroine. Can't stop watching it, combing through it for every detail and staring in awe at the visuals.

    1. Completely with you there. It's an addictive trailer for all the right reasons.

  7. I love a lot of light-hearted movies but there's something so gripping about something like The Revenant. It's going to be so freaking raw and one of heck of a movie experience! With a lot of the Oscar-hype movies being disappointing, I hope this one pulls through. How can it not? I can't wait!

    1. Yeah, if the entire film pulls off the savagery of the trailer, I think we're in for a real cinematic treat!

  8. Wow does this look amazing! I could see Lubezki bowling a turkey and winning again. Also, while I think Fassy is a frontrunner for Best Actor, if I were him, I'd watch out for DiCaprio!!

    1. Fassbender is only frontrunner because this hasn't screened yet...but the minute this actually opens, I have a strong feeling DiCaprio will take everything. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he pulled a Whitaker/Mirren and took EVERYTHING.

  9. I really want to see this movie. I hope I can watch it. I have become mush when it comes to violence in movies. It's amazing because I used to watch gooey violent movies like 'RoboCop' in the 80s as a kid. I'm not sure what happened?

    1. LOL, we all get older and our tolerance for certain things changes. I used to be able to watch anything. I still, mostly, can...but some things turn my stomach where they used to not.

My wife went from watching anything to not being able to watch anything with violence. Like, at all.

So I'll be seeing this alone, as per usual.

  10. I am looking forward to this movie for a lot of reasons, and this is one of them!

  11. Emmanuel Lubezki is incredible!! Though I'm still pulling for Deakins just because he's been overlooked SO MANY TIMES. It'd be interesting if the 'Susan Lucci' of Oscars, Leo AND Deakins, won the same year. That's VERY unlikely though. In any case, yes the visuals of The Revenant is breathtaking indeed!

    1. Deakins was robbed in 07. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is one of the most beautifully shot films of all time.

That said...if this trailer is any indication of how gorgeous this film is going to be...Deakins is SOL this year.

  12. Sooo with you on this. I heard that Lubezki would be making use of natural light for this film and damn does this look magnificent.

Lubezki should win, DiCaprio is in with a great chance since Michael Fassbender is the only true competition up til now, also think Tom Hardy might be in to win for Best Supporting Actor.
Man, I CANNOT wait for this.

    1. I'd have more faith in Hardy if Elba weren't already poised to be a sweeper in Supporting. His reviews and narrative are pretty strong at this point.

  13. LOL, that's never happened before, but anything's possible. Frankly, the film almost looks too grim for the win, even by No Country for Old Men's standards.

Though, Leo is looking good for his best shot (to date) at winning the Oscar. And he's probably getting a second CinSpec win, which will take the sting out of that Shutter Island loss. (Plus, he's 1/8 right now!)

This could very well be my Best Picture winner. Unless something like 45 Years, The Lobster, or Carol WOWS me, it looks like Inarritu will finally get a CinSpec after that Birdman-Mommy switch last year.

    1. Ermahgerd, we think so much alike.

This is looking like a very potential Fisti winner and consolation prize for having Dolan rip the rug out from under Birdman last year. It looks breathtaking, and Leo looks to be at the top of his game...so I anticipate him snagging his second Fisti for this!

But...I'm watching out for the three you mention as well, since all three feel very...Fisti...so there could be trouble up ahead.

    2. Regarding your question as to wether or not somebody has won three consecutive Oscars. The answer is yes. Jim Rygiel & Randall William Cook were the VFX supervisors for the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, and they win for all 3 movies. But the record for most consecutive Oscar wins goes to Walt Disney, who won the Animated Short oscar a whopping EIGHT years in a row!

    3. Awesome Oscar trivia Connor! Thanks for that. Hope you get a chance to see my updated Oscar predictions...I've bowed to Miss Larson, who is certainly a contender for the win!
