Updated Oscar Predictions Pt. 6: Can anything beat Inside Out?

No.

Here are my predictions for Animated Film, re-titled 'Inside Out and the losers'.

Animated Film
The Good Dinosaur
Inside Out
Little from the Fish Shop
The Little Prince
Shaun the Sheep: The Movie

This category can be tricky.  There are some films that feel like frontrunners and then...they go missing.  We saw this happen two years now, with Monsters University feeling like the early favorite...then tepid reviews made it feel like a solidified filler nom...and then it was snubbed for...The Croods?  Then last year we saw The LEGO Movie clean house everywhere and then go missing on nomination morning.  Oscar loves to reward artistic flicks with creative designs and beautiful storytelling...and they love Disney and Pixar (most of the time).  They like claymation and they tend to snatch up those little foreign films that no one wants to predict.

And, because I feel like it, here are the trailers for the films I'm predicting;

  1. Little from the Fish Shop seems way too obscure to get a nom in this category. That kind of foreign nod always goes to a GKIDS title. I'd swap in 'The Prophet'.

    1. You could have a point, but they go for obscure here at times, especially if they are beautifully crafted. They like the 'technique' of it all.

I've heard that The Prophet was pretty awful, so I pulled it from my predictions...did I hear wrong?

    2. Oh, I didn't know that about the bad reviews for The Prophet. Just judging based on distributor.

What have you heard about "Fish Shop"? Will it even be released to be eligible?

    3. I heard a couple reactions from a Prophet screening that pretty much said to write it off...that it was pretty bad and wouldn't make an Oscar dent.

The list I saw of 'possible eligible films' had Fish Shop on it. I haven't heard any reactions from people who've seen it...but it looks like the kind of film that could ignite a passionate base.

    4. Aww, that's a shame about The Prophet. Salma Hayek was so passionate about getting this made and it had some really talented directors working on it.

    5. You know how those test screening reactions can be though, so it may actually make it in with better overall reviews, but for the time being I'm laying off predicting it based on early word back.

  2. At this point, no. I think Inside Out has it in the bag.

  3. I'm still pulling for Inside Out to be the frontrunner that it should be. I want to say it is a lock, but we all thought Lego Movie was a lock to win and look what happened. So while I'm positive it'll likely get in, I don't want to be too sure. Ever since they awarded Brave over Wreck-It Ralph, I've been pretty weary of this category.

    1. To spare repeating myself, read what I just said to Mario below...

  4. I think this category is impossible to call. My head still hurts from The Lego Movie getting snubbed.

That said, Inside Out has to be a lock. Right?

    1. Yeah, The LEGO Movie getting the snub was really bizarre, and yet in retrospect...it was a different animal and it kind of makes sense in a weird way. Inside Out has better reviews than any animated film to come out this decade, and it's emotional appeal is really key here. The LEGO Movie, while sharply made, had no emotional angle. I remember when Big Hero 6 dropped...and you can read my review for confirmation, but I called it the winner of the Oscar then based solely on the scene when Hiro sees the video of his brother...that moment...that emotion...THAT'S what Oscar voters vote for.

Inside Out has that x's 1000

  5. The Fish Shop reminds me too much of the Little Mermaid. I want to see more about The Good Dinosaur but it could be too sweet for my taste. I have to think Inside Out will be up and so will Sean the Sheep. The last one looks quite funny.

    1. I'm intrigued by this Sheep movie that seems to be quite popular overseas.

  6. I'm sure we'll get a surprise (or two?) in this category, but at least Inside Out will make the cut. :)

    1. Yeah, there always are. This category is so hard to predict.
