Satellite Nominations...

NBR is announcing today, so I'm going to try and catch up on all the stuff I missed over the past weekend, including these awards that everyone knows mean nothing.  Yup, The Satellites are kind of an industry joke, but we love them all the same because they are AWARDS!!!  After last year's debacle of Wolf of Wall Street nominations and the wake of the understanding that it never screened for this particular award's body, you'll see that these nominees are edited appropriately.  There are no films popping up here that are end of year releases without test screenings they could have attended.  There is also love for some films that my have seemed forgotten, and their Lead Actress lineup is just, well, delicious.

So, let's take a gander and appreciate it for what it is, which is fun.

Best Picture
Birdman
Boyhood
Gone Girl
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Imitation Game
Love is Strange
Mr. Turner
Selma
The Theory of Everything
Whiplash

Obviously, Love is Strange has no shot with Oscar, but the rest of these are all in the running.  I have a feeling that Mr. Turner and The Grand Budapest Hotel will get the shaft in the end, but they are poised to have a nice critical run.  I'm also wondering if Whiplash is going to be that little film that could and then didn't, you know, when it actually comes to an Oscar nomination.

Director
Damien Chazelle/Whiplash
Ava DuVernay/Selma
David Fincher/Gone Girl
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu/Birdman
Richard Linklater/Boyhood
Morten Tyldum/The Imitation Game

With the current reviews for Unbroken kind of, well, breaking it, I'm currently predicting five of these for Oscar noms.  I'll let you guess which one I'm leaving out.

Film Editing
American Sniper
Birdman
Boyhood
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Fury
The Imitation Game

Adapted Screenplay
American Sniper
Gone Girl
The Imitation Game
Inherent Vice
The Theory of Everything
Wild

Original Screenplay
Birdman
Boyhood
The LEGO Movie
Love is Strange
Nightcrawler
Selma

I love that they went there with The LEGO Movie.  So deserved, so richly detailed, so inspired.

Lead Actress
Marion Cotillard/Two Days, One Night
Anne Dorval/Mommy
Felicity Jones/The Theory of Everything
Gugu Mbatha-Raw/Belle
Julianne Moore/Still Alice
Rosamund Pike/Gone Girl
Reese Witherspoon/Wild

Amy Adams who?  Yeah, I almost forgot she was even in the running this year, and unless Harvey dumps a crapload of money into a campaign for her and that movie, I have a feeling she'll be left out in the cold this year, which is fine since there are more deserving actresses, including the current standbys, Cotillard and Mbatha-Raw.  Like, could they wind up duking it out for the fifth spot?  OMG!

Lead Actor
Steve Carell/Foxcatcher
Benedict Cumberbatch/The Imitation Game
Jake Gyllenhaal/Nightcrawler
Michael Keaton/Birdman
David Oyelowo/Selma
Eddie Redmayne/The Theory of Everything
Miles Teller/Whiplash

Supporting Actress
Patricia Arquette/Boyhood
Laura Dern/Wild
Keira Knightley/The Imitation Game
Emma Stone/Birdman
Tilda Swinton/Snowpiercer
Katherine Waterston/Inherent Vice

Supporting Actor
Robert Duvall/The Judge
Ethan Hawke/Boyhood
Edward Norton/Birdman
Mark Ruffalo/Foxcatcher
Andy Serkis/Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
J.K. Simmons/Whiplash

I'm really shocked to see Duvall pop up here and there and I fear that he may become this thing this year...and then again, I can't see how he gets in over Wilkinson who should pull just as many 'veteran actor' votes and he'll actually be in a better received film.

I'll Get You What You Want/Muppets Most Wanted
I'm Not Gonna Miss You/Glenn Campbell...I'll Be Me
Split the Difference/Boyhood
We Will Not Go/Virunga
What is Love/Rio 2

This category is always a clusterfuck, so I have no idea what to make of this.  It's also really hard to gain a consensus since not many critics bodies are going to even mention songs.

    1. LOL, I love your Begin Again stanning! Like, of all this goodness, you notice the glaring flaw. It is a flaw, but that category is ALWAYS bonkers, so this only adds more names in the pot of fuckery.

  2. Oh let's see what will happen but some big films have not come out yet Duvall gets love because he is considered a Hollywood icon and he is American. I agree that Wilkinson's time is due!

    1. The thing with Duvall is that he's really, really campaigning, and Downey Jr. is pushing him too, so he could wind up becoming a thing...but I hope it doesn't last.

  3. And almost everybody gets a nomination! :P

Love that Noah got a few noms. I'm starting to consider Glen Campbell's song for an Oscar nod. It could be that random song that always gets in.

    1. It would be funny if he was nominated in Original Song, when his doc was shafted on eligibility.
