AFI Top...er...Eleven

American Sniper
Birdman
Boyhood
Foxcatcher
The Imitation Game
Interstellar
Into the Woods
Nightcrawler
Selma
Unbroken
Whiplash

Thoughts:  Nightcrawler is popping up in places I hadn't expected, but I have a strong feeling that Oscar is going to completely ignore it.  American Sniper dodged a bullet by exceeding critical showings despite mediocre reviews, and Whiplash is truly becoming a serious Oscar contender in more than just the obvious.  I'm stunned that Gone Girl is missing here.  It's been showing up everywhere, and in rabid support, so I'm kind of baffled that it missed here.

    Umm...you sure about that?

    1. Well, I'm talking about the bodies who've released nominees, and I'm talking about BP. It won HFA, was in the NBR Top Ten, was nominated at the Sats, and showed up on the Phoenix and Washington critics ballots. Sure, it didn't strike with Boston, and it hasn't won anything individually, but it seemed like a top five contender ATM...

It's exclusion from a list of ten...er...eleven AMERICAN films of the year is rather shocking.

  2. I have heard good and bad things about Gone Girl and that has an influence. Ben Affleck is also involved and I have the feeling he grates on some people's nerves. Birdman is such a strong contender. What about Julianne Moore's film "Still Alice"? Or is she just being singled out but the film isn't considered that great??

    1. Still Alice won't factor into the BP race....MAYBE in the Supporting Actress/Adapted Screenplay, but most likely not. Gone Girl is fantastic, but it has it's naysayers, for sure.

And Affleck was handed the Oscar in 2012 for BP, so he apparently isn't too disliked...

  3. I'm kind of surprised Interstellar made it in at this point, but I suppose it still has an outside chance at enough passion votes to get an Oscar nom for Best Picture.

    1. It's weird how quickly Interstellar went from 'the greatest masterpiece of science fiction cinema poised to take BP' to 'lol, like that's getting a BO nom'...
