2014 Awards Tally Page

So, for the past two years I’ve attempted to present to my readers an up-to-date Awards Tally page so that they could see how the Oscar contenders were fairing in an attempt to more accurately predict the Oscar noms/winners.  Over these three years, this page has undergone some changes to make it more effective.  The first year I did this I only recorded the WINNERS, but that proved to be a bust since there are many nominees who never win jack.  The second year I tallied every single nominee, period.  That made for a really cluttered page, since there are so many awards bodies and some of them (like the Spirits, BIFAs, etc.) nominate films/actors that really have no shot at an Oscar nomination.

So here’s what I decided to do.  I’m trimming the fat, only showing the actors/films that have a shot in their respective categories.  This means that in your Foreign and Documentary categories below, I’ve only included actual contenders, and once the Foreign Language short list is released, I’ll trim more fat.  I've also left off nominees like Michael Fassbender in Frank, because, well, he has 0% chance at an Oscar nomination.  I’ve also categorized this thread so that you only see Oscar categories, and so I’ve placed each contender in the category they are campaigning in.  What this means is that you won’t see a separate category for ‘Breakthrough Actor’, but instead you’ll see Jack O’Connell’s NBR win listed under Lead Actor, because that is where he is campaigning.  Keira Knightley’s BIFA nom in Lead Actress is listed here under Supporting Actress, because thatWis where she is campaigning for Oscar.  Also, all Ensemble wins/nominations will appear under the Best Picture category.

Now, if a contender immerges that I had trimmed because they really seem to have no shot ATM (like Atkins, in Supporting Actress, who was nominated at BIFA for Mr. Turner), I’ll be sure to add them in, as well as their previous nominations/wins.

I’ve also instituted a new TAG this year, which you’ll see below.  It’s called ‘2014 Road to Oscar’ and by clicking on that TAG you’ll see all posts made here with regards to the Oscar race (excluding my personal predictions).  All critic’s awards, precursors, interviews (THR Roundtables), long lists and really any tidbits that could be useful in predicting the final outcome will be given that TAG.

Oh, and wins are in bold.

I think that just about covers it!  You’ll be able to access this page all season by clicking on the AWARDS TALLY 2014 icon to the right of the blog (second icon down from the top).

Everything now reflects the Oscar nominations.

  1. Well end of February will be here in no time. I have a feeling the best actress and best actor will not be surprises (Julianne Moore and Michael Keaton). Usually a song from Disney wins which bores me. I have no idea if any of those songs are from disney though-hahahaaaa

    1. The only Original Song from Disney this year is from Big Hero 6, but it's from an alternative pop/rock band, Fall Out Boy, and it'll be lucky to get a Globe nomination.

  2. I'll be honest...I'm a little underwhelmed with what we have this year, although I loved Birdman and Whiplash. I hope Keaton and Simmons get the gold this year :)

    1. I haven't seen either of those yet, but while this is no where near as strong a year as last year, I have been really surprised with how much I love this year. I mean, my favorite films of the year don't have a shot at winning any Oscars, but as far as quality of film, this year isn't all that bad.

  3. Are those really the only supporting actor performances getting any love? Haven't seen The Judge (and won't) or Foxcatcher (and will), the other three are incredible performances, but Simmons is my pick at this point. Ed Norton in a close second. Boyhood is a movie that has lost steam for me since I saw it over the summer. Here it is the most comprehensive Oscar breakdown I've seen yet, and I'm stuck on supporting actor. Where is the little kid from St. Vincent? Or Riz Ahmed in Nightcrawler?

    1. Those are not the only mentions. Like I said, I'm streamlining this to ONLY show the actual contenders, or those with a shot at contending. Ahmed has had two noms so far (Gotham and Spirit), but he isn't getting near an Oscar nomination so I'm not including him here. I didn't want this to get too cluttered...last year I included EVERY name and it was a mess. There are going to be actors and even films that the Critics really embrace, but Oscar is a different story.

  4. Love this! Good idea to trim the fat, as there aren't dozens of real contenders in most categories.

    1. I could probably trim some more...I'm holding onto some fat at the moment just to show a little 'long shot' diversity...but once SAG and the Globes drop, it'll be time to cut some more.

  5. This is gonna make me sound like an idiot, but what does HMiMA stand for?

    1. That won't make you sound like an Idiot at all. It stands for Hollywood Music in Media Awards and they are relatively new, so no recognizable.
