Trailer Break: Gone Girl

Yeah, this looks incredible.  Fincher is in it to win it.  I still feel like Unbroken is walking away with everything, but a friend likened this to The Departed after seeing this trailer and I'm started to wonder if that could be the case.  Could AMPAS actually consider rewarding Fincher for going back to his roots and showing everyone how it's done?  I've already moved over to predicted Pike as our Best Actress winner, so if this becomes a huge commercial success then I could see it pulling in far more than initially expected, especially since I was so skeptical of even his chances at a nom earlier this year.

But dare I get my hopes up?

  1. The 'dear diary' format is worrying me a bit - I think we will have voice over from Pike, for most of the movie anyways, I'm not sure how well it will work. I'm pretty sure Affleck is going to be nominated, his part looks huge and it's quite unique at least if they keep it like in the book

    1. When I read the screenplay, it was Affleck's role that struck me the most. My only issue is the fact that Lead Actor looks so tight right now, but it is a very big, flashy role with the biggest arc in the film and is surprisingly sympathetic, which could work in his favor.

  2. I'm highly optimistic about this one, looks pretty darn good. I like Rosamund Pike, nice to see her getting more prominent roles in Hollywood now.

  3. hmmm i don't know about any awards or anything (i don't even have the ergy to think about awards this early in the year), but I do think this is riveting and if it's anything like the book--it will be a knockout.

    1. I was a tad skeptical based on my reaction to the script, but the trailers have given me a new-found faith. I can see how Fincher is working the material, and I like what I see.

  5. Hmm... I could see this getting several nominations, but I'm not sure the Academy will want to reward Fincher. If he couldn't at least win Director for The Social Network, I don't think his chances will improve that much for this.

    1. But think of Scorsese. Goodfellas. Raging Bull. The Aviator. He had so many chances. Even in 2002, with the mediocre Gangs of New York. He was the favorite going into Oscar night and yet he still lost, and to Polanski at that! They screwed the pooch by giving that troll the Oscar in 2010, but The King's Speech was on such an uprise it would have been impossible to give the film BP and then give The Social Network everything else.

      It's possible...

  6. Trying to avoid trailers for this one but I just wanted to say how pumped I am for it just from the poster! I really love the book and Fincher is going to ace it :)

    1. I've been super impressed at how well these trailers are keeping the bulk of the story under wraps. Spoiler free and pretty much just the greatest tease ever!
