July Oscar Predictions!

So, this month has quite a bit of change happening in the predictions.  First, The Imitation Game is rising in the ranks due to the response from the last screening and the comparisons made to A Beautiful Mind.  Notices for Cumberbatch were huge and the overall response was very positive.  It looks like this could be Weinstein's pony and NOT Big Eyes, which had a very mixed response and looks to be very divisive, leaning towards the ridiculed.  I'm also losing a bit of faith in Macbeth's overall pull with Oscar, considering the director and the subject (when was the last time Shakespeare did well with these guys) and yet, something about it makes me really want to root for it (OK, everything about it makes me want to really root for it).

The real change this month comes in the form of Selma, the Martin Luthor King Jr. biopic being released in time for Oscar play.  I started off extremely skeptical, but this could really be a HUGE player with Oscar, and so I'm warming to it.

The poster released yesterday for Foxcatcher has me thinking that Tatum is going to be pushed in the Lead category after all, but I'm leaving him in Supporting for now.

For now.

  1. Hi Drew! I still can't wrap my head around Oscar season just yet but man, every time I saw the trailer for Interstellar I was like, why can't this be released RIGHT NOW??! Birdman looks VERY intriguing as well, I hope this could be Keaton's big comeback as a leading man. He's so criminally underrated.

    1. I can't wait to see either of those films. They look incredible.

  2. I'm hoping Tatum stays in supporting, the last thing Carrel needs is votes splitting between the two of them :/ I don't think Adams will get in, even with all the love Academy has for her I heard the film is a disaster

    1. I'm weary on Big Eyes after the screening, but it is still months away from release, and the feedback was mostly of a narrative nature (the flow was off, progression of scenes was bad, tonally inconsistent) and so I have a feeling that Weinstein will demand it recut. Still, Adams got great reviews and the Academy LOVES her, so I have a feeling she could default to a nom. I don't think she's winning anymore though.

  3. The lead actress category this year is so uninspiring.

    1. Sadly, it's like this every year. There are too many interesting and exceptional works from actresses too unknown or films too small to be considered by AMPAS. It's the same names over and over.

  4. Love these! Oh, I hope the Original Song lineup looks something like that. I really have no idea on The Imitation Game and Selma. They seem to be in the hit-or-miss territory of Into the Woods. :/

    1. Yeah, I'm unsure of most at this point (outside of Foxcatcher and Unbroken, which to me seem like obvious locks...if that is even a thing right now) but those films are growing in buzz so I'm thinking it could stick.
