I present to you, Oscar's 2014 Best Picture winner!

I've been saying this since my very first predictions, but Unbroken is going to SLAY with the Oscars (I predicted 9 noms and 5 wins back in April).  Since then, I haven't wavered a bit.  Unbroken is, as far as I'm concerned, way ahead of the pack.  So many have raised concerns regarding it's chances (Too Oscary to succeed!  Unproven director!  This isn't the 90's anymore!) and yet I've stuck to my guns.

Watch the damn trailer.

I not only still believe that this is taking Picture and Director in a WALK, but we're looking at another Screenplay win for the Coen brothers, Deakins' and Desplat's first Oscar wins, some sound Oscars and, if the stars align correctly (which I have a feeling they could), a very Brody-esque win in Lead Actor for Jack O'Connell.  He looks incredible here, and the scope of this character (BAIT!) is going to be undeniable.  If Into the Woods bombs (and it very well could), watch out for this to sweep, with wins for Costume and Art Direction as well.

I've been calling it since the year's beginning, it's about time you join me.

  1. I really want it to be good but the inner cynic in me isn't sure. I've loved O'Connell since his Skins days and this seems to be his year. Fingers crossed!

    1. I'm very unfamiliar with O'Connell, but he looks remarkable here.

  2. Ok at first I was thinking this looks really cheesy, but by the end I was thoroughly impressed. I've always avoided movies about Japanese POW camps. Those camps were hell on earth. I can't even imagine living through that. But it looks like a great film. I'll watch it.

    1. The first half of the trailer felt a little long and overwrought, and then it all kicked in and the whole of it started to make sense.

Either way though, this looks like something Oscar will devour.

  3. Yeah, the first half of this trailer doesn't do the 2nd half justice at all. This could be interesting. Thanks for posting!

    1. Yeah, I've been bullish on these Oscar chances for a while and this trailer changes nothing. That second half puts everything into perspective.

  4. Uh.... I don't know. It looks like Oscar bait and I usually avoid these kind of films. I'm sure it will be decent. I'll just wait for the reviews.

    1. Yeah, this is Oscar bait to the max...but Jolie is a good director (she was the only saving grace for her debut film) and the Coen's are great writers...and Deakins is a great cinematographer and Desplat can write a brilliant score and so, with all these awesome hands in the pot, I'm willing to gravitate TOWARDS this Oscar bait.

  5. I don't know about the wins yet but this looks like a LOCK for nods in Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Cinematography and Best Adapted Screenplay.

    1. Yup, I'm all in for it right now. O'Connell in particular looks remarkably good here.

    1. Not sure how he hooked up with Ang, but early word is that he has the chief antagonist role here and a really baity one. Oscar talk has already started, and I'm currently predicting him for a nomination, especially if this film sweeps. It looks like a really transformative role, and it is one that the Academy likes to reward.

  8. I wasn't thrilled with the trailer, but many trailers have led me astray in the past. Regardless, I have high hopes for this because of the content and Jolie behind it :)

    1. I guess my key point with this is that the trailer pretty much defines OSCAR.

  9. Hi Drew! Some people already calling this Oscar bait but I have to admit I teared up watching this. The only thing is, I hope they didn't just gloss over the fact that Mr. Zamperini is a devout Christian and that's the reason he could forgive the people who tortured him. It's such an incredible story that I hope the film will do it justice.

    1. I don't think they'll gloss over that fact. He's already been interviewed alongside Jolie, back during the Olympic Games, and that was a topic of conversation.

  10. I WANT to believe in this, but I keep getting an Eastwood/Spielberg "give me another Oscar" vibe. We'll see. I still have my doubts. But, hey, Gandhi won 8 Oscars, so who knows.

    1. We shall see, but on paper (and in that trailer) this looks like something AMPAS is going to devour.
