Ten films make Oscar's Visual Effects shortlist...

Elysium
Gravity
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
Iron Man 3
The Lone Ranger
Oblivion
Pacific Rim
Star Trek Into Darkness
Thor: The Dark World
World War Z

I'm really surprised to see Man of Steel and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty missing here.  Oscar is full of surprises, but I hope this doesn't mean that The Lone Ranger will become an Oscar nominee.

  1. I just hope Pacific Rim and Gravity get those nods.

    1. Oh, Gravity is locked and loaded for the win. I do hope that Pacific Rim isn't snubbed. The visuals were incredible.

  2. I haven't seen Gravity yet, so Pacific Rim was the most impressive one for me. I do think that Gravity will get this award from what I've heard, but this category tends to be weird sometimes.

    1. Honestly, the ONLY lock of the night so far is that Gravity will win Visual Effects. It isn't a contest. There is no way on Earth that it loses. I would bet my house on it.

  3. Gravity is the biggest lock in my opinion. I think the 5 will be Gravity, Hobbit, Thor, Star Trek, and Elysium. I haven't seen Pacific Rim, so that one *could* replace Elysium.

    1. I have no idea what to make of this right now. I feel like The Hobbit is secure alongside Gravity...but after that I have no idea. I'd love for Pacific Rim to make it, since it was truly impressive, but it could easily be snubbed. Iron Man 3 makes sense, since they've rewarded the previous two as well as The Avengers, but they aren't campaigning at all...and with so many sequels in the mix it could get the shaft. I think that World War Z could sneak in, and it would be deserving.

      1) Gravity
      2) The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
      3) Iron Man 3
      4) Pacific Rim
      5) World War Z

but I'm really not certain at all passed the first two.

  4. I was going to rank these, but with only 10 I didn't even bother. I'd predict Gravity, The Hobbit, Iron Man 3, Pacific Rim, and Star Trek.

    1. I've lost faith in Star Trek, but it made it here...so you never know.

I just really want World War Z to happen now.
