The monument has crumbled…

I hope this is just rash ‘journalism’, but The Huffington Post is reporting that Daniel Craig is no longer attached to George Clooney’s ‘Monuments Men’.  This is sad news because I was really anticipating this to be Craig’s big break with The Academy.  I’ve been a fan of Craig’s for a while now.  In fact, I give him a nomination in 2006 for his brilliant interpretation of James Bond in ‘Casino Royale’.  Early word was that Craig was not only playing a villain in ‘Monuments Men’, but that he was also playing…A NAZI!  This was like prime Oscar bait and I really expected him to be on Oscar’s final ballot.  Now it looks like I have to rearrange my predictions before posting next month!

The cast is still exciting, and it looks like Matt Damon may have moved into take over for Craig (less exciting, for sure), but this bit of news is somewhat crushing for me.

Now Craig has nothing planned for release this year.  In fact, his IMDB page only shows two unscheduled Bond films and possibly ‘The Girl Who Played with Fire’, which Fincher hasn’t settled down on yet and, as was reported earlier this year, he may not even return for.  BAH, what does this guy have to do to get an Oscar nomination?  I know that’s not what it’s all about, and the man is hugely successful now thanks to his work on the Bond franchise, and I’m pretty sure the success of ‘Skyfall’ will make him a hot commodity, and we can’t forget that he already got his hands on the most beautiful ‘award’ one can strive for (Rachel Weisz), but I really want this guy to add ‘Academy Award Nominee’ to his name.

Better than an Oscar

  1. This is disappointing. I'd love for him to get a nomination, even if I haven't even nominated him yet. He just missed for Casino Royale, but I need to see more of his work, like Infamous and Layer Cake.

    1. I actually haven't seen a slew of his performances, but his Bond is iconic and I nominate him for Casino Royale. Such a fully fleshed out and well rounded performance.
